Our History: PTR's roots stretch back to the beginning of electron beam welding

The technology at the heart of PTR’s EB welding systems was originally developed in the 1950’s by Dr. h.c. Karl-Heinz Steigerwald while working for Zeiss in Germany. United Aircraft (later known as United Technologies Corporation) purchased this technology and began producing electron beam welders in their Hamilton Standard facility in Windsor Locks, CT USA. Hamilton Standard took the German design and worked to make it a robust, user friendly system. These electron beam welding systems were quickly adopted by the industry and many of these vintage Hamilton Standard machines manufactured in the 1960’s/70’s are still in use today. The Hamilton Standard EB welder business was sold to Leybold-Heraeus Vacuum Systems in 1976 and the US facility was moved to its current location in Enfield, CT. Leybold then sold the business in 1989 and the business became PTR-Precision Technologies.

HAMILTON STANDARD

Photo: In 1959, United Technologies acquired the North American rights to Zeiss electron beam welders, assigning the program to their Hamilton Standard Division in Windsor Locks, CT. Hamilton Standard ships the first Zeiss-designed EB welder built in the U.S. in 1961 and later licenses the technology to various companies around the world.

1976 - 1989

Leybold-Heraeus

Photo: In December 1975, Hamilton Standard sold the Electron Beam Welding business to Leybold-Heraeus. Offices were opened in Enfield, CT in February 1976 and production began there in May 1976.

1989 - Present

PTR-Precision Technologies, Inc.

Photo: In 1989 Leybold AG sold the electron beam welding businesses in Maintal, Germany and Enfield, CT USA to Integral Hydraulics in Remagen, Germany. These two divisions were renamed PTR-Praezisionstechnik GmbH and PTR-Precision Technologies, Inc.

In 2005 PTR USA and PTR GmbH joined forces with Steigerwald Strahltechnik GmbH. These three electron beam technology companies comprise the Global Beam Technologies Group – your worldwide connection to expert welding solutions from contract welding to the manufacture of specialized EB systems.

PTR in Enfield was formerly the electron beam division of Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, CT. PTR in Langenselbold, Germany has its origins in the electron beam welding division of the company Leybold-Heraeus, later Leybold AG. Steigerwald Strahltechnik was established by the founder of modern EB processing himself, Dr h.c. Karl-Heinz Steigerwald. For the past five decades our expertise, number of installations and combined capabilities of PTR-USA, PTR-Germany and Steigerwald-Germany have resulted in the largest global presence in the Electron Beam Welding industry.
